Basic Fuel Types of Forklifts
Powered lift trucks called forklifts are used in almost every industry to move heavy items and supplies. The forklift is a really durable and reliable machine which has become important tools in a lot of construction and warehouse environments. Lift truck units vary depending on the type of work environment and the type of fuel which is used to power the lift truck.
Electricity
Electric forklifts are recommended for work sites which have limited ventilation since they produce no exhaust fumes and are fairly quiet. They are designed to be powered by industrial-strength, large batteries. Since the electric forklift batteries should be charging, the worksite must have a charging station. The batteries are tough and could be re-charged up to 1,500 times before they need to be replaced. The charging station must be situated in a ventilated area and include an emergency eyewash station and an acid spill kit.
Propane
Forklifts powered by liquid propane have several benefits over diesel and electric powered machines making them quite common in warehouse and industrial settings. Propane engines are a lot cleaner compared to diesel-powered units. There is no down time required to recharge an industrial battery, and the cost of electricity is more than the cost of propane. A lift truck propane tank can be easily and quickly refueled by changing out the empty tank with a full tank. Normally an off-site supplier refills the empty tank, making refueling very safe and efficient.
Gasoline and Gas
For rough terrain and outdoor applications, the diesel and gas forklifts are the machinery of choice. These machinery are quite common in lumber yards and on construction sites. Their disadvantages comprise relatively high maintenance needs, odorous exhaust and relatively high fuel costs. Their benefits comprise a longer lifespan than other units and dependability in tough conditions. Diesel and gasoline units should be refueled at a supply station on site which meets health and safety policies.
