Forklift Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is provided by large industrial batteries that have to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety procedures should always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is very essential to inspect battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a forklift battery. Complete protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located near the charging area. The route to the post must not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Do not permit items like for example lighters or matches to be utilized while somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging place properly ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
